Van Damme & Lundgren Dive Into ‘Black Water’
Sci-fi requires special effects, but 'Arrival' treats them with more restraint than you might expect.
When we spoke to Bradford Young, the DP of Arrival, earlier this year, he revealed how he and director Denis Villeneuve worked to unshackle themselves from the conventions of science fiction to create a more delicate—even mundane—visual approach. This subtlety permeated the entire production, including visual effects—an atypical choice for contemporary alien movies.

Action legends Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren will reunite once more in Black Water. The action thriller will tell the tale of Wheeler (Van Damme), an undercover operative who awakens to find himself locked away in a CIA black site that is located aboard a submarine. Lundgren will reportedly be playing a fellow inmate named Marco who becomes an ally. JCVD’s son, Kris Van Damme, also stars. The project was penned by Chad Law, who previously scripted Van Damme’s Six Bullets, although there is currently no word on who is directing the film. Production begins later this month in Alabama.
